How to Crop Passport Photos to Official Dimensions
Submitting a passport application is an important process, and the most common cause of application rejection is an invalid passport photo. Different governments impose strict, distinct regulations regarding dimensions, margins, and resolution. In this guide, we break down the official dimensions for US, UK, and EU passport photos, and explain how to crop them locally to meet these standards.
Official Passport Specifications
Understanding the difference in regulations between regions is critical before preparing your photo:
1. United States Passport Dimensions
The US Department of State requires a square photo format:
- Physical Size: 2 inches by 2 inches (51 mm x 51 mm).
- Digital Resolution: Exactly 600 x 600 pixels (minimum) to 1200 x 1200 pixels (maximum).
- Head Position: The head must be between 1 inch and 1 3/8 inches (25 mm to 35 mm) from the bottom of the chin to the top of the head.
- Background: Solid, plain white or off-white.
2. UK and European Union Biometric Dimensions
The UK government and EU member states require a rectangular format:
- Physical Size: 35 mm wide by 45 mm high (3.5 cm x 4.5 cm).
- Digital Resolution: 413 x 531 pixels (representing 300 DPI print quality).
- Head Position: The head must occupy 70% to 80% of the vertical height of the photo (between 29 mm and 34 mm from chin to top of hair).
- Background: Cream or light grey background (UK) or plain white (most of EU).
3. Canadian Passport Dimensions
Canada has one of the largest passport photo layouts:
- Physical Size: 50 mm wide by 70 mm high (5.0 cm x 7.0 cm).
- Digital Resolution: 1500 x 2100 pixels.
- Head Position: The distance from the chin to the top of the head must be between 31 mm and 36 mm.
Common Photo Rejection Reasons
To ensure your passport application passes on the first attempt, avoid these common mistakes:
- Incorrect Margins: Cropping too close to the face or leaving too much background space. There must be adequate space above the top of the hair.
- Bad Lighting or Shadows: Shadows on the face or behind the head will trigger biometric scanning failures. Ensure even, diffused front lighting.
- Glasses and Headwear: Since 2016, glasses are prohibited in US passport photos. Headwear is allowed only for religious or documented medical reasons, and it must not obscure the hairline or cast shadows.
- Expression: Maintain a neutral facial expression or a natural smile. Red-eye, closed eyes, or exaggerated expressions are rejected.
How to Crop Your Photo Locally
Instead of going to a photo studio or using expensive desktop editors, you can crop your photo directly in your browser. Using the LocalFilePress **Image Resizer**:
- Select the official specification from our aspect ratio dropdown (e.g. "United States Passport (2x2\")").
- Upload your photo. The cropping box will lock to the exact aspect ratio required by that country.
- Position your head within the guides, ensuring your chin and top of hair are centered with background borders on all sides.
- Click "Crop and Generate Asset." Our tool scales the output to the exact official pixel values (e.g. 600x600 pixels for US) using high-quality rendering algorithms.
- Download your ready-to-use passport photo.
Since the processing runs locally on your machine, your personal photos are never uploaded to any cloud server, keeping your biometric data completely secure.
